You Are My Sunshine

(Me and Mama aka Fonda, dressed in 80's outfits)
Ok so here's the deal...I don't live with my Mama but I’m around her house...A LOT...and the woman is always singing. This is not something that has occurred over time or just recently began, she's always done it. There are but very few memories I have of my Mother that does not involve something musical, whether it be her singing the most popular song of the day, an old 80's classic, a soothing worship song, or even an off the wall jingle she made up on the spot. Most of the time it’s endearing, at other times it is very annoying...especially if you've just awoken and she's jumping on the bed singing at the top of her lungs "You Are My Sunshine" (with a small lyric change because the originals made me cry as a youngster).Thankfully the woman can “sang” ( yes I do mean sang, I’m from the South), if not I would constantly walk around with cotton in my ears. I have inherited her love of music in much the same way as her freckles or our allergy to pain medication (Thanks Mama). In fact it is mostly that way for my entire extended family. When we all get together, the guitars will be brought out and you will be given the “look” if you go off key. I don’t know why or how this tradition began but it is a comfort to me. I won’t lie if I’m feeling blue I will ask my Mom to sing to me, whether it be on the phone or laying on the couch. Some may say it is childish, I just think I like finding solace in a song. One song lyric by Train that always makes me think of my Mom is.. “ I promise to, sing to you, when all the music dies.” It’s important to me to appreciate the small things, and one of those things is a simple song sang by someone who loves me. What are some of those randomly comforting things that you cherish?
